Electrical Safety: Essential Tips for Everyday Use and During Emergencies

Electrical Safety

Electrical safety is fundamental to harmlessly pursuing our daily life. Modern society does not exist without electricity. Our reliance on flowing electrons to power our homes, businesses, mass transportation and even our vehicles is essential. While electricity’s benefits are numerous, it is also very dangerous. Applying electrical safety practices for everyday use and during emergencies provides life saving protection.

Simple Tips for Electrical Safety

Here are some easy and important ways to stay safe when using electricity at your home or workplace. These simple steps will help prevent shocks, fires, and other accidents, keeping you, your family, and your property protected.

  • Don’t Overload Outlets
Only plug in one appliance like a microwave or space heater per outlet. Plugging in too many appliances can start a fire. Wiring only handles rated voltages and amperage.
  • Keep Water and Electricity Apart
Never use electrical apparatus near water. Dry your hands before plugging in a device or turning on a light. Never stand in water or a wet surface when handling energized power equipment.
  • Replace Damaged Cords
If a cord is cracked or frayed, stop using it. Throw it away and replace it with a new one. Damaged cords can deliver a shock or start a fire.
  • Teach Kids Electrical Safety
Help children learn to stay away from outlets, cords, and plugs. Teach them not to touch exposed electrical wires or insert objects into outlets.
  • Stay Away from Downed Power Lines
If you see a power line on the ground, never approach or touch it. Stay far away and call 911 or your power company. Downed power lines can still carry electricity and are very dangerous.
  • Call Before You Dig
Planning to plant a tree or build something in your yard call 811 first. A utility company employee will check for underground power lines. It’s free and it can prevent serious injury.

Be Ready for Power Outages and Severe Weather

Have flashlights, batteries, and emergency bag ready in case the power goes out. Also, learn where your circuit breakers are and how to turn off the power if needed. Taking time to learn about and practice electrical safety helps with preventing accidents and injury.
