Solar Power Global Expansion is Benefiting Countries Large and Small

Solar power global expansion had an incredible year in 2025, and its growth is far from over. Across the planet clean energy is accepted as the path forward, with solar leading the charge. In 2025, renewable energy sources including solar, wind, and hydro produced more electricity than coal for the first time. Marking another milestone, solar power now exceeds wind power electricity generation as the world’s largest source of renewable energy.

More countries are depending on solar energy than ever before. While China produces the most solar power overall, smaller countries are making impressive progress in recognizing the economic and sustainability benefits. For instance, Chile and Hungary now get around a quarter of their electricity from solar. Not long ago, solar made up less than 10% of their energy supply. In addition, the number of countries using solar for at least 10% of their electricity has grown from 15 countries in 2020 to over 50 today. This shows how quickly solar adoption is spreading.

As expected, solar energy is strongest during the middle of the day when sunlight is at its peak. Around midday last year, on average, solar provided about a quarter of the world’s electricity. Some countries performed even better. For example, the Netherlands and Hungary generated a significant share of their daytime electricity from solar. In fact, setting new records. The obvious drawback of solar is no power generation during nighttime or adverse weather conditions. To combat this challenge many countries now include in their energy management strategy the addition of battery storage systems.

Even with ongoing progress, many countries are not fully using their solar potential. Some still rely heavily on fossil fuels, even though they receive plenty of sunlight. For example, India experienced a large increase in electricity demand but met much of that demand with fossil fuels instead of clean energy. Meanwhile, countries like Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, and Egypt also have strong solar potential that remains underused.

In the United States, clean energy projects are under attack by the Trump administration resulting in delayed expansion or the completion of existing renewable energy assets and associated power grid infrastructure. Meanwhile, legal battles from environmental organizations and project investors have resulted in the courts reversing some administration suspensions. While the U.S. delays its inevitable use of an expanded portfolio of renewable energy resources other countries are moving forward.
