Did you know that our planet is mostly covered by water? In fact, about 70% of Earth’s surface is ocean, seas, and large freshwater lakes! Each June, people around the planet celebrate National Ocean Month. A time to learn about this critical habitat, appreciate it, and think about how we can take better care of it.
Why the Ocean Matters
The oceans do more for us than many realize. It is essential to life. It gives us more than half of the oxygen we breathe, controls the climate, and provides food and jobs for millions of people. It’s also home to countless amazing animals including mammals, fish, and thousands of species that support the global food web. Let’s not forget vast forest of kelp and other marine flora.
How We Can Help
Even if you don’t live near the water, the ocean still affects your life. Sadly, our oceans are facing big pollution problems such as oil spills, overfishing, and rising temperatures. Plastic waste is a major pollutant killing and injurying countless sea creatures. The breakdown of plastic waste into micro-plastics is contaminating the entire oceanic ecosystem and food chain. Saying no to plastic bags and straws, picking up trash when we see it, and learning more about ocean life can make a big difference.
