At the COP16 United Nations biodiversity conference, world leaders approved a conservation funding plan to generate $200 billion annually by 2030 to protect nature. To that end, a major part of this plan is helping developing countries, which will receive $20 billion per year starting in 2025 and increasing to $30 billion by 2030. These funds will go toward conservation efforts and restoring damaged ecosystems.

Cali Fund for Ecosystem Preservation
One of the key decisions from the conservation funding plan was to create the Cali Fund which will require businesses that benefit from nature, such as pharmaceutical companies that use rainforest plants for medicine, to contribute financially to conservation efforts. This ensures that industries that profit from biodiversity also help protect it.
Global Strategy for Environmental Protection
Unlike past UN meetings on environmental issues that ended in disagreement, this session in Rome reached solid agreements. An earlier meeting in Cali, Colombia, had failed to finalize a conservation funding plan, leaving many disappointed. With this purpose in mind, negotiators successfully worked out a clear funding roadmap to meet biodiversity goals.
Importance of Biodiversity Conservation
Scientists stress that biodiversity is essential for clean air, water, food, and climate stability. It also supports medical research and strengthens ecosystems. With this new conservation funding plan the world is making a stronger commitment to safeguarding nature for future generations.
