Greenhouse Gas Accumulation is Increasing and so is Climate Change

Greenhouse Gas Accumulation results from pollutants released from smoke stacks.

A new international study presents a serious warning, greenhouse gas accumulation is increasing faster than scientists expected. This is pushing the planet toward dangerous levels of global warming.

If current trends continue, the Earth will likely pass the key 1.5 degrees Celsius warming threshold by early 2028. A goal established in the 2015 Paris Agreement to help prevent the worst impacts of climate change. This means we are running out of time to take meaningful action.

Why 1.5 Degrees Matters

The 1.5°C limit isn’t just a random number. Scientists chose it because warming beyond this point is expected to have serious climatic ramifications impacting damage to the planet and human life. More intense heat waves, droughts, floods, and stronger storms are likely. Rising sea levels will make many small island nations uninhabitable.

As of now, the planet has already warmed about 1.24°C above pre-industrial levels. Once the world reaches 1.5°C, the impacts of climate change will likely be frequent, intense, and harder to reverse.

Greenhouse Gas Accumulation: What’s Happening?

The recent report, published in Earth System Science Data, shows that human activities are releasing carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. We are currently adding about 46 billion tons of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere every year.

Scientists say that we can only release 143 billion more tons before we cross the 1.5°C warming line. If we keep going at this pace, that threshold will be exceeded by February 2028. This rapid greenhouse gas accumulation is mostly due to burning fossil fuels like coal, oil, and gas.

The World Already Passed 1.5°C in 2024

In 2024, the Earth experienced an average temperature of 1.52°C above pre-industrial levels. The first time that has happened for an entire year. It’s a warning sign that we are getting closer to making this level of warming permanent.

The good news is that we can still act to reduce the damage by greenhouse gas accumulation. This means using less fossil fuel and switching to clean energy like solar and wind. Protecting forests and oceans that naturally absorb carbon and supporting climate-friendly policies. Reducing waste by making sustainable choices in our daily lives, and pushing for global cooperation to work toward the same climate goals.
