Embracing LED Lighting: Residential, Commercial and Industrial Property Transition

LED Property Lighting City Scape

LED lighting is transitioning the way homes and businesses illuminate interior and exterior spaces. In fact, the Residential Energy Consumption Survey (RECS) reports 29% of U.S. households use at minimum one LED lamp in their residence. In April 2016, 86% of surveyed households report using CFL or LED luminaires. It makes sense this trend will continue for years to come.

Beginning in 2012, residential lighting conversion to CFL and LED was significantly driven by the Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA). The result, significant adoption by homeowners and incentive for lighting manufacturers, new and old, to ramp up R&D and production.

Replacing incandescent bulb with LED lighting

Leading the residential property shift; primarily with property owners, was the manufacturing phase out of incandescent bulbs to more energy efficient light bulbs. Similarly, renters are also transitioning to more energy efficient lighting. In both home ownership and renter scenarios the dramatic decrease in the cost of LED lights and their easy availability to purchase supports continued residential acceptance.

Federal Government Support of Efficient Lighting

To promote ongoing adoption of efficient lighting, states and local governments along with utility companies offer programs aimed at reducing energy consumption. Incentives include subsidized purchase of high-efficiency light bulbs and utility rebates. Together with federal government programs including Energy Star and Lighting Facts, which provides labeling information, the future of LED illumination looks good. It’s so easy to say it looks bright, but that’s cheeky!

Conversion to LED lighting in the commercial and industrial (C&I) markets is slower relative to residential but change is gaining speed. Leading the charge in C&I is the rapid expansion of interior and exterior durable fixtures, which cover all lighting installation needs and offer controlled lighting options. The benefits of cost-efficient lighting and lower maintenance in addition to improving occupant comfort and productivity support adoption. With ongoing advancements in Internet of Things (IoT) technology, which remotely controls LED luiminaires in C&I properties have years of installation ahead.

Residential and C&I properties acceptance of LED illumination is becoming the lighting norm. With advancements in light output per watt, correlated color temperature (CCT) flexibility and longevity of performance, the features and benefits provide superior lighting options at home and inside and outside of the office.
