Nature Based Activities Enhances Mental Wellbeing and Mood

Nature based activities for adults improve mood and generate positive emotions 

Nature based activities for adults are growing in popularity. A recent study performed by The University of York, located in the United Kingdom, evaluated mental health benefits resulting from outdoor recreation. Basically, the study reinforced previous observations confirming adults who experience nature enhance their overall mental wellbeing. This includes improved mood, reduced anxiety levels, and positive emotions.  

Individuals participating in outdoor activities lasting between 20 and 90 minutes (about 1 and a half hours) over a period of 8 to 12 weeks (about 3 months) showed the most positive improvement. An assortment of activities was evaluated. These include gardening, conservation work, and immersing oneself in the natural world, which included day hikes and longer-term camping adventures.

According to lead study author Dr. Peter Coventry “While doing these activities on your own is effective, among the studies we reviewed it seems that doing them in groups led to greater gains in mental health.” 

Dr. Coventry research suggests a need to invest in community and place-based solutions. These measures support a role in addressing a post pandemic demand for mental health services. Nature based activities for adults meaningfully connect humans well “beyond passively viewing nature”.
